Orbera Q & A

What is Orbera®?

Orbera® is a type of gastric balloon, a small device that's inserted into the stomach and filled with sterile saline solution, helping patients feel full faster so they eat less. The amount of sterile solution used can be varied based on the patient's anatomy and needs. The Orbera® balloon is placed into the stomach via the mouth and esophagus using a long endoscope, without any need for incisions.

How is the procedure performed?

The Orbera® procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis. During the procedure, the long, flexible endoscope is passed through the mouth and into the stomach. The stomach interior can be viewed on a monitor prior to balloon placement. Once the assessment of the stomach is complete, the Orbera® device is inserted into the stomach using the endoscope. Saline solution is carefully injected into the balloon until it reaches its desired volume. The entire procedure takes about a half hour to perform under sedation, and patients can be discharged about two hours later.

How long does the balloon stay in place?

Orbera® is usually removed about six months after placement, although it can be removed earlier if desired. Removal is performed using the same techniques used in balloon placement.

What happens while the balloon is in place?

During the six months that the balloon is in place, patients will have ongoing support to help them establish healthy eating and lifestyle habits that can support their weight loss once the balloon is removed. Support services can include nutritional counseling and routine office visits to help ensure continued success following balloon removal.

How much weight can I lose with Orbera®?

Most patients lose an average of about 22 pounds after six months. The specific amount of weight loss will vary from one patient to another.

Is Orbera® a good choice for anyone?

Orbera® can be a great alternative for many patients, eliminating the risks associated with more invasive surgeries. Still, it's not ideal for every patient. The best way to know if Orbera® is a good choice is to schedule a consultation with Dr. Allan MacIntyre.
